چکیده

Studies have shown that neither humans nor automation can achieve superior inspection system performance; hence, hybrid inspection systems where humans work in conjunction with machines have attracted research. Over the years, performance of inspection systems has been evaluated using traditional measures of speed, and accuracy. However, human trust plays an important role, influencing the responses of the inspectors toward the use of automation and directly impacting overall inspection performance and quality. Since most studies on trust have been conducted in the context of supervisory control, there has been no documented evidence of studies looking at the issue of human trust in the hybrid inspection environment. In response to this need, a study was conducted to address the issue of system performance and trust as it relates to overall inspection quality.

Correlating Trust with Signal Detection Theory Measures in a Hybrid Inspection System

Signal detection theory provides a precise language and graphic notation for analyzing decision making in the presence of uncertainty. It has been widely used in visual inspection to evaluate system performance. Recent studies also found that trust in automation plays a very important role in visual inspection. Particularly, trust has a great influence on the use of automation in a hybrid inspe...

Investigating Human Perception and Trust Due to Changes in Hybrid Inspection System Parameters

As more and more systems used in our everyday life develop to be automated, humans assume less direct control of the system and its components. Therefore, humans usually act in a monitory behavior in many complex environments, and based on certain thresholds they establish action behaviors. A key issue in the context of supervisory control is human trust in automation, which has gained an incre...

Measurement of Trust in Hybrid Inspection Systems: Review and Evaluation of Current Methodologies and Future Approach

Recent advances in computer technology have motivated the automation of various functions of the inspection task, an important process in quality control. However, since purely automated inspection has limitations, hybrid systems, ones taking advantage of the superiority of humans in pattern recognition, rational decision-making, and adaptability to new circumstances, are preferable. To achieve...

A Model for Predicting Human Trust in Automated Systems

As a result of recent advancements in computer technology, hybrid inspection systems, those in which humans and computers work cooperatively, have found increasing application in quality control processes. These systems are preferable because they take advantage of the superiority of humans in rational decision-making and adaptability to new circumstances. Although the classical performance iss...

Measurement of human trust in a hybrid inspection system based on signal detection theory measures

Human trust plays an important role in influencing operator’s strategies toward the use of automated systems. Therefore, a study was conducted to measure the effect of human trust in a hybrid inspection system given different types of errors (i.e., false alarms and misses). The study also looked at which of the four dimensions of trust (competence, predictability, reliability and faith) were th...
